Works, Awards & Current ProjectsThe Girl with Three Legs: A Memoir By Soraya Mire’ Overview
The
Girl with Three
Legs
shows how betrayal occurs at the hands of other women and even the hands of
one’s own mother.
It is
a psychological treatise on betrayal, feminism, and sexuality, while always
maintaining, at the forefront, a story of humanity and spirituality.
What would you do if you were forcefully
the subject of
the ritual of
female
genital cutting?
You would be left only to dream about what could
have been, your life stolen.
When the basic part of me was cut away and stolen
by a culture that deemed it a “gift,” my spirit began to drift to a place far,
far away.
A place that could not root itself, could not attach
itself to those things the rest of the women around the world take for granted.
Hearing the sound of the scissors cutting away the
flesh between my legs made me feel the curse—the
curse of being born into a female body.
This curse burns the blood and rots the flesh, and
it signifies that a mistake was made when I was created as a woman.
Permission was given to others to take away my
dignity and inflict upon me the most unthinkable pain.
Having the ultimate power, my mother and her
fighting pack defiled my body and “corrected” my existence.
Nothing was done for my wellness or highest good.
I was born in a female body and, in order for a man
to claim me as a worthy wife, I was forced to have my genitals tortured and
mutilated. Then, I was placed on a shelf until someone felt the desire to use me
for his own pleasure.
Throughout history, an estimated 135 million of the
world's girls and women have undergone female genital mutilation
(FGM),
and two million girls a year are currently at risk of mutilation – approximately
6,000 per day.
FGM is a cultural tradition,
not a religious
rubric,
done for the purpose of
socially accepted’ purity.
It is considered a
girl’s
initiation into womanhood, the ritual ensuring her virginity and fidelity.
Its occurrence dates back to the Pharaohs of ancient The Girl with Three Legs is a book of inspiration, of how one heart can hold the light and never let go, ultimately shining far and wide so that others may be able to see. It is a story of strife and courage, and it is a story of the glorious forms of love that are the basis of it all. I have written this memoir to free my soul and to pass that freedom on. It is my sincere effort at opening up the national and international dialogue that is needed to plant the seeds of change. Soraya Mire’
